Jaren Jackson Jr., a forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, and Alex Caruso, a guard for the Chicago Bulls, are two of the players selected to be the first team of the NBA All-Defensive team for the 2022-23 season.
On Tuesday, the National Basketball Association (NBA) revealed the complete results of the voting. In addition to Jackson and Caruso, the player’s Brook Lopez, Jrue Holiday, and Evan Mobley were selected.
Marc Gasol (2012-13) was the previous Grizzlies player to earn Defensive Player of the Year. Jackson followed in his footsteps to become the next Grizzlies player to win the award.
Jackson was the most switchable defender in the NBA during the regular season. Despite the fact that he is not the traditional rebound hound who wins among big men, Jackson had an average of 3.0 blocks and 1.0 steals and was the most switchable defender in the NBA. As a result of his length and athleticism, he could defend guards almost as effectively as he protected the rim, which enabled him to make up for the limited minutes he received due to his chronic foul trouble.
Lopez finished second in voting for Defensive Player of the Year, trailing only Jackson. Lopez had an outstanding defensive season despite being 35 years old. Caruso’s ascent as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders continued, as he earned a spot on the All-Defensive team for the first time thanks to a combination of his length and his effort. Holiday, who has been named to an All-Defensive team in five of the past six seasons, plays defense beside him in the backcourt.
Mobley, who was just in his second season in the NBA, continued to show signs of becoming a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year. After Donovan Mitchell’s arrival, Mobley’s offensive game did not take the leap that many people expected. Still, Mobley was a dominant and rangy defender on the interior who should only continue to grow as one of the league’s finest bigs. Despite this, his offensive game took a different leap than many expected.
In addition to the veterans Draymond Green and Bam Adebayo, the second team welcomes three additional rookies in the form of Derrick White, O.G. Anunoby, and Dillon Brooks. The fact that Brooks had a poor performance in the playoffs will reportedly cause the Grizzlies to terminate connections with him in the offseason, making his first nomination to an All-Defensive team less meaningful.
Green also has a future clouded with doubt because he has a player option, but he can decline it and instead enter free agency. With his eighth All-Defensive nomination, he continued to construct a resume deserving of consideration for induction into the Hall of Fame as one of his generation’s most distinctively influential players.
