Abu Dhabi Welcomes NBA & FIBA: Basketball Without Borders Debut

The National Basketball Association (NBA), the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) all made the announcement today that the 13th edition of Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia will take place at the New York University campus in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), from Friday, June 2 through Monday, June 5.

This will be the very first time that the worldwide basketball development and community outreach event co-hosted by the NBA and FIBA will be held in the Arabian Gulf.

The BWB Asia 2023 tournament will bring together the best male and female players under the age of 18 from all around Asia. They will have the opportunity to get instruction from current and former NBA, WNBA, and FIBA players, legends, and coaches, as well as compete against their peers from the region. In addition, the campers and coaches, whose identities will be revealed before the camp start, will also participate in programming that focuses on developing life skills, leadership, and community service.

A Junior NBA Abu Dhabi Elite Camp will take place at the New York University campus in Abu Dhabi from Friday, June 2, to Sunday, June 4, in connection with the BWB Asia 2023 tournament. The camp will bring together 40 of the most talented young men and women from the Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi League to participate in fundamental skill development and 5-on-5 competition. The participants range in age from 15 to under 15. The second season of the Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi competition was expanded and debuted in January by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and DCT Abu Dhabi. The competition features boys’ and girls’ leagues, each made of 450 players aged 11-14 from schools across the UAE capital.

“For more than two decades, Basketball Without Borders has played a key role in developing top international prospects,” said NBA Europe and Middle East Managing Director Ralph Rivera. “Of the more than 100 international prospects who have graduated from Basketball Without Borders, more than 100 have advanced to the NBA and WNBA.” “We are ecstatic to be bringing this game-changing program to the Arabian Gulf for the very first time, and we would like to thank FIBA and DCT Abu Dhabi for their commitment to assisting in the development of the subsequent generation of players in the UAE and beyond.”

“We are extremely happy to have this edition of BWB Asia in the UAE for the first time,” said FIBA National Federations & Sports Director Zoran Radovic. “Here, the best prospects from Asia and Oceania will be able to demonstrate their skills and commitment to our sport.” “We would want to express our gratitude to DCT Abu Dhabi for accepting this collaborative initiative from both the NBA and FIBA, as well as for their commitment to this highly regarded camp. In Abu Dhabi, we are looking forward to catching a glimpse of the sport’s rising stars.

“It is an honor to host the 13th edition of Basketball Without Borders Asia in Abu Dhabi, bringing the prestigious program to the region for the very first time,” said Saleh Al Geziry, Director General of Tourism at DCT Abu Dhabi. “Basketball Without Borders Asia” refers to a non-profit organization that promotes peace and understanding through the sport of basketball. “DCT Abu Dhabi is committed to inspiring and equipping young athletes, both in the UAE and across the world, teaching the game’s fundamental skills and core values, including teamwork, respect, determination, and community.” This statement was made in collaboration with the National Basketball Association and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

We are nurturing the skills of school children around the UAE through programs such as the Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi Elite Camp and our current Jr. NBA League program. These programs aim to build a love for basketball and a commitment to teamwork and individual responsibility. We hope all the players have a successful season and look forward to watching their abilities grow.

The Dallas Mavericks and the Minnesota Timberwolves will play two preseason games at Etihad Arena on Yas Island as part of The NBA Abu Dhabi Games 2023. These games will take place on Thursday, October 5, and Saturday, October 7, and are part of a multiyear collaboration between the NBA and DCT Abu Dhabi. BWB Asia 2023 and the Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi Elite Camp are a part of this collaboration.

In addition, as part of this partnership, there will be a number of interactive fan events that will feature appearances by both active and retired NBA players, as well as a series of NBA FIT clinics that will promote health and well-being, and an exhibition event for the NBA 2K League. As a result of the agreement, DCT Abu Dhabi will act as the Official Tourism Destination Partner of the NBA throughout the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and China. This will be accomplished through Experience Abu Dhabi, the tourism promotion effort of the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Since its founding in 2001, Basketball Without Borders has hosted more than 3,900 campers from 134 countries and territories, 105 of whom have played professionally in the NBA or WNBA. In addition, 67 BWB camps have been held worldwide on six different continents by the NBA and FIBA.

BWB Asia 2023 will be backed by Nike, which has been a global partner of BWB since 2002. Nike will provide the participants with gear and footwear from their brand, while Gatorade will ensure that the players and coaches stay hydrated throughout the camp.

Since the 1987–1988 season, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has broadcast NBA games on television.
